Having the knowledge to hand is what ultimately stops the hanar. How would knowledge of an indoctrinated hanar have started a war? Surely the hanar would have gone through with its evil plan no matter what. Worse still is that the confidential info doesn’t even seem to justify the level of danger Kasumi is allegedly in. Kasumi will still get the confidential info from the greybox regardless of whether you destroyed it or not, making all of this kind of superfluous. And second, no matter what choice you make, none of this has any impact on what happens in Mass Effect 3. Is allowing Kasumi to keep the greybox necessarily a Paragon choice? I’m not entirely convinced.

This is another one of those morally ambiguous moments, like with the Collector base and the geth heretic’s virus, that doesn’t have a clear right or wrong answer, and yet the game forces a moral code down our throats with the Paragon and Renegade system. The first is Mass Effect 2′s binary moral choice system. Should we allow Kasumi to keep the greybox and put herself in danger or destroy it and removing Kasumi’s last link to her lover? It’s a difficult and heartbreaking choice, although its power is somewhat diminished due to two flaws. Kasumi is of course reluctant to destroy the greybox because it’s her last remaining link to her lost love, and so ultimately the final decision falls to you, the player. Once Kasumi manages to access the greybox, Keji instructs her to erase it for fear that the confidential information stored on it could make her a target. What really makes Stolen Memories stick out for me is the final choice at the end. You have to surreptitiously find a way to break into Hock’s vault, obtaining DNA and voice samples and the like, then once you’ve found the greybox, you have to fight your way out of Hock’s house, culminating in a final fight with Hock’s gunship. While Donovan Hock is a woefully underdeveloped villain (and his accent is fucking atrocious), Stolen Memories is a really fun mission. It’s this greybox that is at the centre of Kasumi’s loyalty mission, Stolen Memories. A neural implant the stores and records memories. We find out that her romantic partner Keji Okuda was killed by crime lord Donovan Hock for his greybox. She’s an adventurer at heart, which makes her a joy to be with.īut underneath her fun, carefree exterior, we learn she has experienced tragedy in her life. Present her with a locked room and she see’s it as a challenge rather than a deterrent.

A self confessed kleptomaniac, she steals things not for the wealth, but just for the sheer thrill of it. I was immediately won over by her when we first encounter her on the Citadel. Kasumi, on the other hand, is a completely different story. He just exists primarily to regain you with war stories and to be an extra option on the squad selection screen. While there’s an interesting idea behind the character, we never really got to delve into backstory, learn anything significant about him nor bring closure to his arc. You may recall that the main criticism I had with Zaeed Massani was that I never felt like I truly bonded with him. Another squadmate in the form of Kasumi Goto, the master thief.
